The Knights were briefed on a string of mysterious fires in Rome, only the first three of which seemed to be arson. Something was strange about the way that the fire spread. They were tasked to go to the scene of a recent fire and investigate.
Arriving at the scene, they found the gutted building still smoldering. Simone Billox, the Chief Arson Investigator, introduced herself, and explained that the fires seemed to originate from the interior surfaces of the walls and move straight the walls of the buildings. They watched a video, where a professional arsonist tied to the DiRisio crime family broke into the building and began taking notes, nervous about something. After he left, a flaming human-shaped figure floated through the walls and set the place aflame. Alanna suggested they try to find someone that the DiRisio family was extorting in order to get more information about the mob. Billox gave them the name of a grocer who had made payments to the family.
They headed to the Grocer's, where Alanna and Kate headed in to try to ask questions, while Rose and Bo went around to scope out the back. Inside the grocer was a young dark haired boy and a man in a pinstriped suit. Thing seemed tense, and the boy told them that the Grocer was busy at the moment. Bo and Rose found the back door open, where the grocer was being menaced by two men. Rose intimidated the leader into repaying the grocer for the TV his thug had smashed, and then letting him go back into his store. Alanna and Kate, hearing the commotion, ran to help, but Alanna was tripped by the man in the pinstriped suit, who aimed a gun at Kate and ordered them to leave. Alanna elbowed the weapon out of his hands, as the old guy came out. They asked the old man who ran this area of town, and he gave the name Benicio DiRisio, admitting that his son, Antonio DiRisio, was in the backroom at that moment. In the backroom, Antonio and his thug Louis were faced down by Rose and Bo, and Bo put the succubus whammy on the mob prince. He admitted who he was, and that they were collecting protection money. When they asked about the arson, he said that when people didn't pay, bad things tended to happen. Bo tried to get Antonio to set up a meeting with his father, but he was out of the country. Kate and Alanna came to the backroom, and when they accused Antonio of using magic, he was legitimately confused. He said that he'd just hired an arsonist name to do the job. He admitted Moretti had seemed on edge lately, and was hiding out or otherwise MIA, despite having a target left to hit, a chemical plant called ChemRight. They insisted the men accompany them, and Antonio asked that Louis get to go pick up his little six-year-old girl, to keep his wife from worrying. He said that he didn't want his wife, Lisabetta, leaving the house at the moment, because some people might have been targeting her. They finally agreed, and he sent Louis to fetch the little girl, Nicolette. Bo mind-whammied him to ensure his cooperation.
They finally headed to ChemRight, where they dragged Antonio inside with them. Alanna summoned a fog to hide them from the cameras, and they realized the machines were running, which Antonio said they shouldn't be at night. He speculated that Moretti was there, and headed onto the plant floor, where the frightened arsonist heard them, and became freaked out by the presence of someone in there with him, firing in their direction. Antonio tried to talk him down, but Moretti rambled about how they needed to get out, that it was going to "burn them all". The room grew hotter around them, and then the back wall burst open in an explosion of flame, and a fiery humanoid floated in. A panicked Moretti dropped accidentally set off the charges around the plant, and fires sprang up all around them. Moretti begged them to protect him from the creature, which he was certain had come to kill him. They tried to run for it, and while Moretti got through to the lobby, the Charred One caught up to the rest, trying to get through them to take down the man. Their weapons seemed useless against it, and fire had blocked their path out. Rose shot out a pipe and the sprinklers came on, starting to put out some of the flames here and there. It did nothing to the Charred One, however, which set Kate on fire, and Bo had to put her out. Unfortunately, the Charred One caught up to Moretti, telling him that he must pay, as he pleaded that it hadn't been personal, that he wasn't a killer. He managed to get the window open, as Alanna stabbed into the fiery ghost... only to have her sword melt upon striking it. Rose distracted the ghost as everyone climbed out, and finally managed to land a blow that destroyed it. She clambered out as well, and they saw Moretti booking it across the parking lot... when the factory exploded. Kate was knocked out by the chemical blast and revived by Alanna. They caught the arsonist, who was now a sobbing, shaking mess, as the police and fire department arrived.
Wynn agreed to pay for the damages to the company, and Moretti was taken in for questioning, pleading guilty to his crimes. He claimed the ghost was that of one of his arson victims, which had chased him across the city. Moretti was placed behind bars.
